Jacob and Patricia Asbæk came up with the idea of CCA back
in 1989. The plan was to create a unique place for exhibiting and
producing contemporary art which respected commercial and artistic
interests.
This rather ambitious starting point made certain demands
on the practical framework of the place. How do you combine a
traditional gallery where clients walk straight in from the street
with an exhibition hall where professional curators bring complex
themes from contemporary art to life? On top of that, the place had
to have studios where these world-famous artists could have free
reins. And a restaurant, as well as parking space and good
infrastructure. After doing the sums, Patricia and Jakob decided
that they needed about 2500 m2 which of course had to be located in
a spot where both visitors and residents would be struck by its
breathtaking beauty.
Southern France was the initial choice, but by chance they ended
up in Majorca instead - in the small town of Andratx. An orange
grove there seemed to fit in with all of Patricia and Jacob's
dreams and subsequently, in 2002, they opened one of Europe's most
unique and comprehensive centers for contemporary art.
